Now, 3D printing seems to be an unexpected tool for the space agency. Detailed scale models of planetary bodies such as comets, asteroids, and other worlds are used to help test spacecraft navigation and landing systems in real life.
The structure of the model is based on data and images from early space missions. The image above shows two versions of the Mars Moon Phobos model. The white in the background is the original 3D printed object. Olivier Dubois Matra of the European Space Agency’s Guidance, Navigation and Control Section explained: “We then add colors and surface treatments to produce a more realistic model in the foreground.”
Then, the moving camera is used to represent the spacecraft's view of the earth and maneuver around the model. This allows physical testing of the guidance and landing procedures, and is used in conjunction with virtual testing using specialized software.
