Geomagic Touch haptic device and software tool set
Geomagic Touch (formerly Sensable Omni) haptic devices provide true 3D input through force feedback. In the Geomagic® Freeform® and Geomagic® Claytools® 3D modeling systems, touch is included in research and commercial applications. The Sensable Phantom device can accurately measure three-dimensional spatial position (using x, y, and z axes) and the orientation of the handheld stylus (flip up and down, shake left and right, and move laterally). These devices use motors to generate the force that pushes the user's palm backwards to simulate touch and interact with virtual objects. 3DOF (degrees of freedom) and 6DOF models are available.

    Training, research and OEM applications
Phantom haptic devices have a wide range of applications, including cutting-edge research and design projects, in which intuitive and real interaction with the digital world is required. In several models, Phantom's end effectors can be customized to simulate various tools. OEM applications include medical simulation and training exercises, where the stylus simulates the physical sensations of using syringes, scalpels, arthroscopes, or other medical devices-such as probing, puncturing, drilling or cutting.

    Device combination

Geomagic's Phantom equipment varies according to the size of the workspace, the amount of strength and force, the range of motion, the accuracy of position perception, inertia and fidelity. Geomagic Touch and Geomagic Touch X (formerly Sensable® Phantom® Desktop™) devices support a series of motions equivalent to palm movement at the wrist, and promote various commercial, academic and research applications. The large Sensable® Phantom® Premium™ model provides a series of motions equivalent to elbow or shoulder manipulation of arm movements. The Phantom Premium product line includes two high-strength (HF) models and three types of 6DOF (degrees of freedom) devices; 6DOF devices not only provide spatial positioning, but also provide force feedback in azimuth (turning up and down, shaking left and right, and moving sideways).

Other commercial and scientific applications include:

    Robot control
    Virtual assembly
    Collision detection
    Training and skills assessment
    Molecular modeling
    Repair
    Nano Control
    3D modeling
    Visually impaired applications
    Entertainment and Virtual Reality

In custom, third-party and research design applications, Phantom devices require the use of the OpenHaptics® tool suite. This software tool suite provides developers with the ability to fully integrate Phantom device functions in 3D applications. At a high level, the toolkit enables Sensable Phantom haptic device support, real 3D navigation, material properties, and polygon object support for applications that already use OpenGL technology. At a lower level, the tool suite provides developers with full access to sensor readings, device control, direct control of force rendering, and other functions. It also includes the QuickHaptics™ micro API, which enables rapid development of haptics applications using the sample code provided.
The OpenHaptics tool suite is free for academic research. For commercial (OEM) or non-commercial developer deployments, developer and/or commercial runtime licenses are required, and fees are charged accordingly. The Geomagic online developer support center is free for academic research customers, while OEM and non-commercial developers are provided through a valid OpenHaptics software maintenance contract.
